I am telling it to you anyway, because I got to know the man personally at a later date and his integrity impressed me. The Egyptologist was, in the summer of 1986, part of a team involved in excavating part of the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt. He was employed by the Romanian University of Craiova (a city in the west of the Wallachian lowlands). At a depth of 10m (30ft) the archaeologists came upon an apparently insignificant grave. The walls bore no paintings or hieroglyphs. In the middle of the dark tomb stood a sealed sarcophagus, again without any paint on it, and it contained dried fruits, ceramic figurines of cats, toy figures carved out of ivory, and finally the bandages of a small mummy. Once the linen had been removed layer by layer, they revealed the body of an approximately six-year-old boy with a diagonal incision slanting across the thorax. In his chest was an artificial heart. The notaltogether-serious Weekly World News [62] later reported:

“The heart consisted of manmade material and unknown alloys. It is an artificial heart, smaller than our hearts and much more technologically advanced. Both the fixed and the mobile parts fit together in a way that is unfamiliar to us … The artificial heart had clearly been placed there surgically. The natural heart was missing. This heart transplant has been done in such a way that our surgery today has no knowledge of.”

The Egyptian journalist Ahmed El Mansour speculated in a daily newspaper in Cairo that either the heart had originated from an earlier, unknown culture or had been transplanted there by ETs.

What then has become of the corpse and the artificial heart? My Egyptologist said that two inspectors of the antiquities department had wrapped the mummy in plastic for the purposes of research, sucked the air out, and then carried the parcel away. Later he had learned that carbon-14 dating had concluded that the body was 5,000 years old. He never heard anything again about the mummy and the artificial heart. One employee at the Egyptian Museum, though, said that the whole affair did not concern the Romanians, nor the rest of the world. The whole subject needed to be dropped.

So as far as the story goes, and I pass it on with qualifications, 5,000 years ago someone had an interest in saving the life of a six-year-old boy. Was it that person’s own child? At that time the Fourth Dynasty ruled in Egypt. These were the pyramid builders. As is known from the investigations into countless mummies, 3,000 years ago Egyptian surgeons were already amputating single toes and replacing them with pieces of wood: the occupant of tomb TT-95, for example, is a female mummy with a wooden big toe. Furthermore, ancient Egypt abounded with medicines and potions. The Ebers Papyrus alone, now kept at the University Library in Leipzig, contains 776 recipes for medicines for all sorts of aches and pains.
